You've found the perfect candle — the scent is dreamy, the vessel is beautiful, and you can't wait to light it. But are you getting the most out of every burn? With just a few simple habits, you can dramatically extend the life of your soy candles, improve their scent throw, and keep them looking gorgeous from the first light to the very last flicker.
Here's everything you need to know about candle care, straight from the makers at Berkshire Candle Company.
1. The First Burn Is Everything
This is the single most important rule of candle care, and it's one most people don't know: always allow your candle to achieve a full melt pool on the first burn.
Soy wax has a "memory" — it will only melt as wide as it did on the first burn. If you extinguish your candle before the wax has melted all the way to the edges of the jar, you'll create a "tunnel" down the center of the candle. This tunneling wastes wax and shortens the life of your candle significantly.
The fix: On the first burn, let your candle burn for at least 1 hour per inch of its diameter. For a standard 3-inch jar candle, that means burning it for at least 3 hours the first time. Don't rush it!
2. Trim Your Wick Every Single Time
Before every burn — yes, every single one — trim your wick to about 1/4 inch. This is one of the easiest and most impactful things you can do for your candle.
Why does it matter? A long or mushroomed wick causes:
- A larger, hotter flame that burns through wax too quickly
- Excess soot and black smoke
- Uneven burning and potential tunneling
- A diminished scent experience
A trimmed wick produces a clean, steady flame that burns at the right temperature to release fragrance evenly. You can use a dedicated wick trimmer (they're worth it!) or simply a pair of scissors. Just make sure to remove any trimmed wick debris from the wax before lighting.
3. Don't Burn for Too Long at Once
We know — when a candle smells this good, it's tempting to keep it burning all day. But for the health of your candle (and your safety), limit burns to 4 hours maximum at a time.
Burning longer than 4 hours causes the wick to "mushroom" at the tip, the wax to overheat, and the fragrance to burn off too quickly. It can also cause the jar to become dangerously hot. After 4 hours, extinguish the flame, let the candle cool completely, trim the wick, and then relight.
4. Keep the Wax Pool Clean
Before each burn, take a quick look at your wax pool. Remove any:
- Trimmed wick debris
- Dust or particles that have settled on the surface
- Matches or other foreign objects
Debris in the wax pool can ignite and cause uneven burning or flare-ups. A clean wax surface means a cleaner, safer burn every time.
5. Burn in the Right Environment
Where and how you burn your candle matters more than you might think. For the best results:
- Avoid drafts — fans, open windows, and air vents cause uneven burning and excessive flickering, which leads to soot and tunneling
- Keep away from direct sunlight — UV light can fade the color of your candle and affect the fragrance over time
- Burn on a stable, heat-resistant surface — always place your candle on a coaster or tray to protect your furniture
- Keep out of reach of children and pets — safety first, always
6. Store Your Candles Properly
When you're not burning your candles, how you store them affects their longevity and scent quality. Follow these simple storage tips:
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources
- Keep the lid on (if your candle has one) to protect the wax and preserve the fragrance
- Avoid storing in the refrigerator — the moisture can affect the wax and wick
- Store upright to prevent the wax from shifting
Properly stored soy candles can maintain their fragrance and quality for 12–18 months.
7. Know When to Say Goodbye
As much as we love a candle that burns to the very end, it's important to stop burning when 1/2 inch of wax remains at the bottom of the jar. Burning below this level can cause the jar to overheat and potentially crack or scorch the surface it's resting on.
But don't throw that jar away just yet! Soy wax is water-soluble, which means you can clean out the remaining wax with warm soapy water and repurpose the jar as a planter, a pen holder, a makeup brush organizer — the possibilities are endless.
8. Use a Candle Snuffer (Not Your Breath)
Blowing out a candle might feel satisfying, but it sends a puff of smoke into the air and can disturb the wax pool, causing uneven surfaces for the next burn. Instead, use a candle snuffer to gently extinguish the flame without any smoke or mess.
No snuffer? You can also dip the wick into the melted wax using a wick dipper or a toothpick, then straighten it back up. This extinguishes the flame cleanly and coats the wick in wax, making it easier to light next time.
Why Soy Candles Reward Good Care
Soy candles are already a superior choice — they burn cleaner, longer, and more evenly than paraffin candles. But with proper care, a high-quality soy candle can last 30–50% longer than you might expect. That means more hours of beautiful fragrance, more value for your money, and a better experience from start to finish.
At Berkshire Candle Company, we put tremendous care into crafting every candle — from the quality of our soy wax to the fragrance blends we choose. We want you to get every last beautiful hour out of each one.
